Mable McKinnley's
I get an email from Groupon....
"Don't forget to use your Groupons!"
Happily I checked soon to expire groupons and realized that I had one that I forgot about. It was to a cute little store in downtown Anchorage called Mable McKinnley. The sweet hubs and I added this in to our 'errands' which consisted of tanning, beer store and dinner...in that order.
As we pulled up, I thought they would be closed...5pm on a Saturday. But luckily, they were open for another hour! Success! We climbed the stairs to this somewhat hidden gem....and the first thing I noticed was the smell...they have some delicious candles in addition to my all-time favorite - Volcano, which I had only ever gotten before from Anthropologie. While the store may be small, it is packed full of goodies.... vintage style dresses, sweet mary-jane shoes, and owl earrings - Oh My!
As I flipped through the racks and kept adding dress upon dress, I secretly hoped that they wouldn't look awesome....even though I have this groupon and I KNOW I'm buying something tonight...I really don't need any more dresses....in fact, I'm on a mini-crusade to get rid of a bunch of my current clothes (I've been reading a minimalist blog lately).
After trying on a couple of things, and deciding that these AMAZING insulated leggins were the way to go...I make my way to the check-out....and a cute little grey/birch scarf catches my eye. Aghh! As soon as I see it, I know I'm getting it.... So...with three items in bag, a hop in my step and an excited husband (as I agreed to go to one more beer store before heading home)....we depart Mable McKinnley and look forward to returning to this hidden Anchorage gem.

G.R.I.T.S.? Like hominy?
You may be wondering... What is an Alaskan G.R.I.T.S.?
Is it someone that is a really hard worker and they don't mind getting their hands dirty?
Is it someone that just really likes grits?
Does G.R.I.T.S. stand for some weird new religion that is sweeping the nation?
Nope to all of the above...
An Alaskan G.R.I.T.S. is moi.
A Southerner that transplanted to Alaska two years ago.
An Alaskan Girl Raised In The South.
Well, at least I'm trying to be an 'Alaskan' girl. (grin) It has been a process, a s-l-o-w process. But a good one. I have heard recently from family that I haven't seen since I moved to AK... "Wow, you are so different". "You have changed SO much." "I really like this new you!" (At this point...I have to wonder...what was wrong with the old me?)
Nothing. Not one stinking thing was wrong. I'm just different now. More laid back? More open-minded? Not as concerned about what others think, or have, or material things? Whatever it is...it's nice.
Don't get me wrong, I still LOVE make-up, the color pink, anything sparkly, clothes with brand names, going out, sweet tea, cornbread, and all things 'Southern'.
But now I also like: halibut, Xtra Tuffs, dressing more casually, coffee, the beautiful Alaska scenery, hiking, snowboarding and on occasion...LESS makeup! (Don't get too crazy...I HAVE to have something on my face.)
So...if you are interested in reading...I'll have some things to tell you... stay tuned.
